Knowing a Water Filter When You See One

The first step is to ensure you know
what the water filter looks like. In almost all cases, they are long
cylinders that have rounded bottoms and a small cap on top. You will
find that your refrigerator’s owner manual lists a specific brand
and model, but there are likely generic options you can buy. There
are a few ways to replace the filter, including looking up the model
online or simply calling your local
appliance repair shop
for help.

The Most Common Locations of Water Filters

The location of your particular water
filter will depend on the type of refrigerator you have. Many modern
fridges have their water filter located in the upper right-hand
corner of their fridge, in the back. If not there, it is often behind
the grille on the floor, generally on the left side. Keep reading for
more assistance if your filter is not located in any of these
locations.

Common Water Filter Locations Based on Fridge
Type

The shape of your refrigerator can also
help you determine where your water filter is located.

  • Top-Freezer. This is the most common fridge shape for older fridges. It has a large door for the fridge and a small freezer on top, each with its own door. To find the water filter, open the fridge door and look at the top right corner. If there is housing there, find the tab to open it and the water filter is likely inside.
  • Bottom-Freezer Fridge. A common slight variation of the traditional top-freezer model, this freezer is on the bottom and opens like a drawer. It has baskets and there are two doors to the unit. The filter is most commonly on the top right or left, or the left of the lower grille.
  • French Three-Door Fridge. This type of fridge has a bottom freezer but the fridge above it has two doors of its own. To find the water filter, look between the produce drawers. If you see a round handle, that is the old filter.

These are just a few options. Remember
that you can always Google the type and model of your unit to find
where the water filter is located.
