The 5 Most Common Oven Problems

Here are the 5 most common oven problems you need to look out for.

Whether you’re cooking dinner for a small family or for a party of 20,  oven problems can bring the evening to a screeching halt. If you want to keep your oven working smoothly for years to come, here are the 5 most common oven problems you’ll need to look out for and how to fix them:

  • Incorrect oven temperature
  • Doesn’t turn on
  • The door won’t open
  • Self-clean doesn’t work
  • The light doesn’t work

Incorrect oven temperature

A preheated oven should maintain the temperature that it’s set too. If your food is consistently coming out undercooked or the temperature always reads higher than you’ve set it to, you may need to have the temperature controls re-calibrate If your model allows. Some of the entry-level models will have higher fluctuation then some of the high-end models.

The oven doesn’t turn on

If your oven isn’t turning on, check the circuit breakers and then make sure the oven is plugged in. If it is receiving power, there could be a broken wire, bad control element, or wrong amount of power coming to the unit. If this case, it would be a good idea to turn the power to the oven off at the breaker and call a professional. Because the problem is electrical and could be internal or external, you shouldn’t turn it into a DIY project which could result in an injury or damage to property.

The oven door won’t open

If your oven door does not open after a self-clean cycle, try unplugging it for at least 5-minutes and carefully move the door lock lever. If that doesn’t work, reset the self-clean cycle and wait for 15-minutes, then cancel it and try moving the door lock lever once the oven has cooled off. If the door still won’t open give Sarah’s Appliance Repair a call.

The self-clean feature doesn’t work

If the self-clean cycle isn’t working, it’s typically because the door switch isn’t locking properly. If that’s not the case, your oven may need to be tested and inspected by a repair professional.

The internal oven light doesn’t turn on

If your oven light isn’t working and you’ve already replaced the bulb, there could be a chance of a faulty light switch, electronic control, or wire connection. In this matter, you may want to hire a professional due to the risk of electric shock or greater damage to the unit.
