5. Make sure you clean out the lint trap if needed. Most washing machines collect lint during the wash cycle and will dispose of it in the drain during the draining part of the cycle. If your machine is a Maytag, however, you might need to clean the lint that collects in the center tube of the agitator every once in a while. In other machines, you might need to remove the lint from a filter located inside of the washing machine near the top of the tub.
